Women of Worth Nomination for Somerset Hills Staff Member
The Special Needs Adult Program (SNAP) for young adults wanting friendship and socialization, implemented by Amy Margaret-McDonald, Exercise Testing Coordinator at the Somerset Hills YMCA, lands her a nomination from the L’Oréal International Group, who believes that “Women of Worth Can Change the World.” Each year they recognize such women whose volunteer work is making a difference in a community.
Melissa Riggio, a volunteer at Somerset Hills YMCA, was a bright, articulate young woman who never allowed the fact that she was born with Down Syndrome prevent her from accomplishing her dreams. One day, Melissa confided to Amy that she felt socially deprived and often lonely. After brainstorming with Melissa and her family, Amy established SNAP, a social group designed to bring young adults with special needs together. Their first get together was a Valentine’s Day dance and subsequent outings included a trip to the circus, the movies, a barbeque and a Flag Day 5K run. Sadly, Melissa passed away in March after a courageous battle with leukemia. According to Amy, SNAP is also becoming something of a support group for participants’ parents, who get to meet through the group.
SNAP is open to any young adult with special needs, aged 15 and older. For more information, call 908-630-3560 or visit somersethillsymca.org.
