The Charles D. Worthington Atlantic City campus of Atlantic Cape Community
College is the site of many expanding opportunities. Changes to courses
and infrastructure will provide students new education options, greater
access to technology, and amenities like a revamped cafeteria and student
center. Additionally, all courses for an Associate in Science degree in
General Studies are now offered at the Atlantic City campus.
Camden County College has begun offering a new science certificate that
can be earned easily within a year’s time. Completion of the 26-to-28-credit
program will fulfill the core math and science requirements that most
colleges and universities deem necessary for transfer into science-based
programs.
Eastwick College’s HoHoKus Hackensack School’s “Hispanic
Nursing Program” has recently been approved to begin teaching Licensed
Practical Nursing in both English and Spanish. The 18-month program includes
600 hours of ESL in addition to the curriculum and training necessary
for graduates to take the LPN national licensing exam. All instructors
are bi-lingual and during the first nine months students can test in either
English or Spanish.
As a participating partner in the Basic-Skills Workforce Training Program,
Middlesex County College is offering basic skills training to employees
of Middlesex County businesses at no charge with the aide of a $1.88 million
grant from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce development.
Training is available in English as a second language, written and verbal
communications, computer applications (Windows, Microsoft Office), and
mathematics and measurement.
School Relations at Ocean County College can assist prospective teachers
in passing the Praxis Exam with five different Praxis Reviews. All sessions
meet on the OCC Main Campus, College Drive, Toms River. Cost is $175 per
course (textbook must be purchased separately at OCC’s bookstore

Salem Community College now offers both an associate in arts (A.A.) degree
and an associate in applied science (A.A.S.) degree in biotechnology.
The A.A. degree prepares graduates to transfer to a four-year college
or university to major in biotechnology, biology, microbiology or a related
field. The A.A.S. degree prepares graduates for immediate employment in
the pharmaceutical field, forensic science, research laboratories or medical
laboratories.
Additionally, SCC now offers new degrees in biology/chemistry and physics/engineering
which provide students with a solid foundation in scientific and mathematical
principals.
Bergen Career Institute: The Adult Education Division of Bergen Tech,
now offers full-time career training programs in the business and construction
trades. The new programs include: Administrative Assistant, Carpentry/
Residential Construction, Plumbing, HVAC/R ( Heating Ventilation, AC &
Refrigeration, Electrical, GED and ESL (English as a Second Language).

In 2005 the Burlington County Institute of Technology, Westampton Campus,
located in Mt. Holly, New Jersey was one of two schools to take part in
a Burlington County pilot program to bolster recycling in the schools.
BCIT/Westampton Campus recycled more that 44,000 pounds of paper, cardboard,
bottles and cans in the first eight months (October until June) of the
pilot program. BCIT/ Westampton Campus has taken other actions to help
protect the environment. The lighting throughout the building has been
up-graded to energy efficient T-8 and compact fluorescent lamps; occupancy
sensors are in use in about 30 percent of the building. BCIT/Westampton
Campus continues to work to find ways to protect the environment.
Mercer County Technical Schools is celebrating its 40th anniversary this
year. Also, Mercer’s Performing Arts High School is celebrating
its 25-year jubilee by having the students present a performance at the
Kelsey Theater on the campus of the Mercer County Community College. For

Passaic County Technical Institute is preparing students for global communication
by introducing Chinese, Japanese and Arabic, plus English sign language
classes, in addition to the traditional Spanish and French. The school
currently has an in-house faculty teacher for Japanese and sign language,
and conducts Arabic and Chinese classes through online courses. For more

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 164 recently
provided students at Passaic County Technical Institute in Wayne, N.J.,
with hands-on exhibits that offer insight into its four-year telecommunications
apprenticeship training program.
The wide range of benefits associated with apprenticeship training include
an hourly wage while pursuing studies, lifelong job placement, and exceptional
medical and retirement benefits. To qualify for apprenticeship training,
applicants must be at least 17 years old; possess a high school diploma;
have one year of algebra and a valid driver’s license. Programs
are offered at Local 164’s technologically advanced training facility
in Paramus, N.J., and a satellite center in Toms River.
