Middlesex County College features a series of new certificate programs for those who want to upgrade their skills including:

Information Systems Security, known as CyberSecurity, was developed with advice from the FBI, industry and government. The program can be completed in a year by those with one year’s college experience.

A certificate in Project Management offered in a 45-hour program meets the requirement to become a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM). Help Desk Administration can be completed in two semesters after prerequisites are met. Contact 732-906-2526.

UMDNJ launches new BioPharma Educational Initiatives for professionals to advance their careers through a variety of courses, certificates and degree programs. The new Certificate in Clinical Recruitment Science prepares students to apply both strategic and scientific approaches to patient recruitment and site selection for clinical trials. New Allied Health programs at Ocean County College - Medical Terminology I and II, online. The courses, in 12 modules, are prerequisites for certificate programs such as medical coding specialist or medical transcriptionist. A new initiative enables students to receive advanced standing for having successfully completed courses in paramedic training, records technician, coding, transcription, and others. At Caldwell College a unique affiliation with St. George’s University Medical and Veterinary School in Grenada allows students to receive their degrees in medicine or veterinary medicine in seven years, rather than the usual eight years. This program is New Jersey’s first Veterinary Medical School.

New Graduate programs include: Master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) training in preferred interventions for autism and related disorders, M.A. in School Counseling, and M.A. in Art Therapy.

Also new at Caldwell are certificate programs in Computer Forensics and Networking Security.

Aquatic farmers are now being cultivated at Cape May County Technical School For the past 10 years CMCTS’ Agriculture and Natural Resources program has turned toward aquatic farming – or aquaculture, the growing of fish and shellfish.
Labor statistics report a growing demand for workers in the agriculture, food and natural resources industries, who have horticultural and turf management skills.

Mercy College launches the innovative MercyDIRECT, an interactive marketing agency run exclusively by students and faculty to bring real-world experience to those enrolled in the MS in Direct and Interactive Marketing degree program. Local Non Profit Agency Helps Retailers Meet their Workforce Needs National statistics show the Retail Industry tops the list of high-demand occupations, and continues to add new jobs to the economy.

ASAH, a nonprofit of schools and agencies in New Jersey, provides highly specialized services to more than 10,000 infants, children and young adults with disabilities. Since 1974, ASAH advocates legislative and regulatory changes to improve quality of life for individuals with disabilities and their families. The Women’s Center at Jewish Family and Vocational Service of Middlesex County serves displaced homemakers who have lost financial or emotional support as a result of separation, divorce, death or disability of a spouse. American Red Cross and Jersey Coast Chapters report they have recently trained 426 new disaster volunteers to be more ready for any disaster situation. They also trained 98,086 residents of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, including children, for disaster preparedness. They increased their Health and Safety course training and have certified 45,749 people.

The NJ Coalition for Abstinence Education offers a four-hour presentation geared towards middle and high school teens to empower and educate them on making wise choices concerning their health. Literacy Programs

Jersey City Free Public Library trains and utilizes volunteers to work one-on-one with low-literacy adults. Two years ago, the Library started an English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) program to serve the enormous immigrant population. Many clients have college and professional degrees from their native country but are struggling to learn how to speak, read and write English better in order to succeed in this country. Many attend civics classes, also offered at JC Library, as they prepare to apply for U.S. Citizenship. Volunteer tutors learn to teach both ESL and Basic Literacy Skills. Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County has been awarded ProLiteracy America Accreditation, acknowledging its superior professional leadership, effective programs, committed governing boards, and outstanding volunteer support. Literacy Volunteers of Gloucester and Monmouth Counties serve adults with free tutoring. Once trained, the tutors commit at least 100 hours a year, meeting in a public place like a library, community center, school or even a Wendy’s to change someone’s life.

Literacy volunteers of both Gloucester and Monmouth counties are recruiting and training volunteers from all walks of life to be tutors. LVGC estimates that 50,935 adults in Gloucester County cannot read, and 15,790 don’t speak English at home.
“Reading is important because it strengthens individuals, families, and communities’ ability to access health, education, political, economic, and cultural opportunities and services”, says Executive Director, Joan McAllister.

Award for Most Improved Test Scores at a school, was presented to PS 75 in the Bronx, NY, which cites American Reading Company’s 100 Book Challenge as critical to their success. Fourth-graders scored 87% higher on the state’s Language Arts exam in 2005 than they did the year before. “100 Book Challenge has changed the culture of the school,” said Principal Eva Garcia. Guild of Creative Art’s Annual Open Juried Shows…and more in, Shrewsbury, NJ

At the Guild close to 150 artists submit about 230 pieces for open juried shows. About half are accepted. Media include oil, watercolor, pastel, pencil, pen & ink, acrylic, sculpture, photography, mixed media and collage.
The Guild’s November exhibit will feature the fabulous wildlife photography of Joseph Prusky, along with works in various media by members. The December show, “Give a Gift of Art” will showcase works of members.
